June Roden - 2012 Teacher Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame Inductee

June Roden
B.S., McMurry University
Girls' P.E., Asst. Coach Girls' Basketball
English Language Arts Teacher

This year's Teachers' Hall of Fame winner honored at the annual Mineral Wells High School 50 Year Club Reunion was Mrs. June Roden. She graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1949 and from McMurry University in Abilene with a Bachelor of Science.
After meeting her husband-to-be at Mcmurry, they married and eventually made their way back to Mineral Wells to establish their home. She entered the MWISD system where she filled many different positions: Girls' PE, assistant coach for girls' basketball, and English/Language Arts teacher. She taught many of our friends and then their daughters. Did any of their granddaughters pass her way?
She has been described by some of her former students as a real pro - determined to make them physically fit, having them "dress out" every day, warm up with jumping jacks and drills and play intramural basketball. She taught health and first aid as serious courses - no worming out of her classes!
Another said she was what all coaches should be: the compliments do not come any higher. She was introduced at the Induction Ceremony of the Class of 1962 Saturday, June 9, 2012, in the Mineral Wells High School auditorium by Marguriete Crum, Secretary of the 50 Year Club.
Each year a Teacher's Hall of Fame plaque is made to honor the teacher chosen. They are displayed in the meeting room of the Mineral Wells High School 50 Year Club. They will later be moved to the club's offices in the restored Home Economic Building.
Mrs. June Roden will join Mrs. Winnie Fiedler, Coach Pat Simmons, and Miss Laura Wallace in this honorable position.

Mineral Wells and the 50 Year Club Mourns the Loss of Member R. J. "Skeet" Walton

R.J. “Skeet” Walton

A dedicated and faithful member of the MWHS 50 Year Club, R.J. "Skeet" Walton, 81 years old, died Sunday, June 3, 2012. Former Executive Director of the MWHS 50 Year Club, Jessie Teddlie, said, "It is a great loss! He was dedicated to his family and MWHS 50 Year Club. I know he loved doing any and all tasks to the very best of his ability including his work with MWISD. He had a smile for everyone and was willing to help his neighbors and friends at any time."

A service to celebrate and remember his life will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday, June 7, at First United Methodist Church in Mineral Wells.

Robert Joe Walton was born April 25, 1931, in Crane, Texas. R.J. “Skeet” was raised in Mineral Wells, where he later graduated from high school in 1948. He worked at a local radio station KORC prior to graduation and afterwards began working at the Baker Hotel. He learned the business by working in all departments and was appointed assistant manager in 1952.

It is also at The Baker that he met the woman he would later marry, Lou White. The two were married May 24, 1952. Soon to follow were sons Bobby and Danny and then daughter, Louann.

After 30 years in hotel management in Galveston, Wisconsin and Illinois, Skeet and his family came back to Mineral Wells where he began working for Mineral Wells ISD. He was with the district for 17 years, never missing a day of work.

There are many who will miss him: a large number of friends and family, including his wife and children, and a faithful companion, his dog Harley.
