Dear Miss Wallace,

    Many years ago a gardener tenderly planted an orchard of seedlings. With careful nurturing, the seedlings, by spring, developed into small, sturdy plants.

    During three more winters and springs the young trees grew. Some had needed pruning to curb undesirable growing characteristics; others, however, had been provided with careful attention to enable them to survive.

    As her young trees came to full maturity, weathering both winter storms and summer drought, the gardener thought, "These are fine and productive, but I can do even better with the next seedlings entrusted to my care."

    So it was with you, Miss Wallace. Seeking always to inspire the highest personal and scholastic standards in your pupils. You were never satisfied with mediocrity. Throughout your teaching career, you held firmly to the belief in the worth of the individual.

    Although you were certainly a bulwark of both the English and Latin departments, we of the BURRO staff, because of your many years of your untiring devotion, painstaking effort, and unswerving loyalty, feel that you are especially and unforgettably ours.

    So, Miss Wallace, we respectively dedicate the 1958 BURRO to you.

Hall of Fame Inductee

June Roden

This year's Teachers' Hall of Fame winner honored at the annual Mineral Wells High School 50 Year Club Reunion was Mrs. June Roden. She graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1949 and from McMurry University in Abilene with a Bachelor of Science.

After meeting her husband-to-be at Mcmurry, they married and eventually made their way back to Mineral Wells to establish their home. She entered the MWISD system where she filled many different positions: Girls' PE, assistant coach for girls' basketball, and English/Language Arts teacher. She taught many of our friends and then their daughters. Did any of their granddaughters pass her way?

She has been described by some of her former students as a real pro - determined to make them physically fit, having them "dress out" every day, warm up with jumping jacks and drills and play intramural basketball. She taught health and first aid as serious courses - no worming out of her classes!

Another said she was what all coaches should be: the compliments do not come any higher. She was introduced at the Induction Ceremony of the Class of 1962 in the Mineral Wells High School auditorium by Marguriete Crum, Secretary of the 50 Year Club.

Each year a Teacher's Hall of Fame plaque is made to honor the teacher chosen. They are displayed in the meeting room of the Mineral Wells High School 50 Year Club. They will later be moved to the club's offices in the restored Home Economic Building.

Mrs. June Roden will join Mrs. Winnie Fiedler, Coach Pat Simmons, and Miss Laura Wallace in this honorable position.

2014 Hall of Fame Inductee

Curtis Scharnberg

This year's inductee into the Mineral Wells High School Teachers' Hall of Fame was the very popular Mr. Curtis Scharnberg. The late Mr. Scharnberg was honored at the annual Mineral Wells High School 50 Year Club Reunion on Saturday morning, June 14, 2014 in a crowded auditorium of Mineral Wells High School alumni, many of whom were his students in past years. Also in the audience was his son, Jody, Class of 1960. 

Marguriete Crum, Secretary of the 50 Year Club, informed the audience of the winner of this year's Teacher of the Year award at the Induction Ceremony of the Class of 1964. Mr. Scharnberg, having received his B. S. at Texas Tech and his M. S. at Texas A and M, was hired to teach science at Mineral Wells High School in 1956. He taught all of the science subjects, but Chemistry was the subject he taught most of the time.

He loved kids and was very involved in all school activities: driving a bus, selling tickets to all sporting events, and driving athletic buses on out-of-town trips. He even coached the high school golf team.

He retired in 1976.

One of his former students had this to say about him, "Mr. Scharnberg was a great teacher. He would help students with problems relating to chemistry so they could understand. I made an 'A' at Texas A and M my freshman year because of Mr. Scharnberg. It was the only A I received that year."

Even though Mr. Curtis Scharnberg passed away in 1977, his legacy lives on as is evident by all of the votes he received for Teacher of the Year, Marguriete Crum stated. She asked his son, Jody Scharnberg, to stand in the audience as she told him that a plaque would be made in honor of his father.

Each year a Teacher's Hall of Fame plaque is made to honor the teacher chosen. They have previously been displayed in the meeting room of the Mineral Wells High School 50 Year Club. A place is now being prepared for them in the club's offices in the restored Home Economics Cottage.

Curtis Scharnberg will join Mrs. June Roden, Mrs. Winnie Fiedler, Coach Pat Simmons, and Miss Laura Wallace in this honored position.
