An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. After a brief period of changing the time of observance for four national holidays under the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968, the restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor all America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

In June, Mineral Wells High School alumna, Helen Hart Luckett was elected to represent the 50 Year Club as the 2014 Coming Home Queen for Mineral Wells High School. She was a beautiful Queen as she was escorted onto the field Friday night, September 26, by her son, retired U.S. Army Col. James H. Luckett, of Fredricksburg, Virginia. The 1941 graduate was dressed in the school colors of red and white and was given the traditional bouquet of red roses. Her husband, Ed Luckett, was also a graduate of Mineral Wells High School, Class of 1935.

Driving a Thunderbird Convertible belonging to Sarah Patterson, 50 Year Club Secretary, Marguriete Crum, and Mrs. Luckett wave to the crowd as they enjoy the parade before the bonfire at the high school.

Helen Hart Luckett and her husband, Ed, raised two sons who both went on to become graduates of the United States Military Academy. She has led a busy life, being a community volunteer in various organizations, becoming very active with the Boy Scouts of America in 1958. Over the years she has been involved in many other organizations and today shows no indication of slowing down.

Active in Ridglea Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, the MWHS 50 Year Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Huguenot Society of Texas Inc. and still pursuing her interests in history and genealogy, Mrs. Luckett has a very full calendar.

I encourage you to read David May's interview with her in the Mineral Wells Index. I am awed by her accomplishments and her busy life-style! Oh, did I mention she preceded me as the MWHS 50 Year Club Historian?
Ronald Bond passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2013. He was one of the 50 Year Club's most beloved and commited members and it saddens me to learn that I will no longer be able to see his smiling face or hear his encouraging comments at our functions.

Born Ronald Keith Bond on July 20, 1934 in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Lola Claire Blackwell and Donald Zane Bond, he graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1951 and the University of North Texas in 1955.

Ronald was also an active and commited athlete and student at MWHS during 1948-1951. In his Senior year the Burro gave this account: President Student Body '50-'51 ~ Football '48-'51 ~ Treasurer Hi-Y '50-'51 ~ Track '48-'51
Don’t let your class be left out!

The 50 Year Club is asking each class of Mineral Wells High School to help with an exciting project. As you know, the Lillian Peek Home Economics building is being restored. The original brick walkway leading to the building from 5th Street has sustained a lot of damage over the years and also needs to be restored.
Work has already begun on a new walkway. We would like for each class to donate $2,000 to help with this restoration. With your donation you will receive an engraved concrete plaque with your class name. Below is the first plaque donated by the Class of 1949.

Don’t let your class be left out!

Have your class representative contact the 50 Year Club offices today; donate $2,000 and have your class name placed in the walkway for future generations to see.
MURPHY, JR., Veteran Tribute
As many of us still have our veterans on our minds and in our hearts today, I want to share with you the story of one of our own.

A Mineral Wells High School graduate from the class of 1958, John S. Murphy, Jr. began his long career with the U. S. Air Force in the Reserves in 1961 after spending some time in the Texas Army National Guard. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt through the Air Force ROTC program at Texas Technological College in 1964, and went on active duty beginning in July of that year. He then completed Undergraduate Pilot Training and was awarded his pilot wings at Reese AFB, Texas, in August 1965, followed by B-52 Stratofortress Combat Crew Training.

His first assignment was as a B-52 pilot with the 26th Bomb Squadron at Altus AFB, Oklahoma, and after completing F-105 Thunderchief Combat Crew Training, he served as an F-105 pilot with the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand, from February to October 1968.

Capt Murphy served as an instructor pilot with the 3500th and 3501st Pilot Training Squadrons at Reese AFB from November 1968 to August 1971, and then completed F-4 Phantom II Combat Crew Training before serving as an F-4 pilot with the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Royal Thai AFB from November 1971.

On June 8, 1972 he was forced to eject over South Vietnam while flying a Tiger Fast FAC mission, and was taken as a Prisoner of War by North Vietnamese forces. This was his second shoot-down, having been forced to eject over Laos during an earlier Tiger Fast FAC mission on February 10, 1972, and being rescued the next day. After spending 293 days in captivity, Capt. Murphy was released during Operation Homecoming on March 27, 1973.

He was briefly hospitalized to recover from his injuries at Sheppard AFB, Texas, and then served as an F-4 pilot with the 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron at Camp New Amsterdam in the Netherlands from Sept 1973 to June 1976, followed by Air command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

Maj Murphy's final assignment was on the staff of Headquarters U. S. Air Force in the Pentagon, where he served as an Air Operations Staff Officer with the Tactical Division in the Office of the Deputy Director for Combat Readiness, Directorate of Operations and Readiness, Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations, from June 1977 until he resigned his commission in the Air Force on June 15, 1978.

John and Jo McCloud (Class of 1959) have been married since 1959 and have 3 children and 8 grandchildren.

His 2nd Distinguished Flying Cross w/Valor Citation reads:

Captain John S. Murphy distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 30 April 1972. On that date Captain Murphy repeatedly led strike flights into lucrative warehouse and storage complexes despite deteriorating weather and intense antiaircraft fire. Remaining in the target area for over four hours, his directions, under extremely trying circumstances, were responsible for the destruction of eleven warehouses and large amounts of supplies with no friendly losses. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Murphy reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
